About this photo...
Lower East Side had once been, for a long time, a transit sector for newcomers : Irish, Germans, East European Jews, Greeks. These immigrants were so poor they couldn’t have moved anywhere else, they had no choice but to stay within the sordid tenements of the desolate, yet very early to become overpopulated quarter. At the end of the 19th Century, Lower East Side was the world’s most densely populated area. This photo has been viewed 1941 times
