The oval-shaped place, extending from the 14th Street to the 17th Street, has Broadway and the 4th Avenue as its limits. Between 1880 and 1939 it had been an important gathering point for mass demonstrations. Was the headquarters of many political movements as well as syndicates : The American Civil Liberties Union, The American Communist Party, The Democratic Party of Tammany Hall, also The Syndicate of Women Labor in Clothing.
