first Washington Square Arch Photo Suivante
At the northern entrance of the Washington Square, on the center of the 5th Avenue, a temporary wooden-and-plaster Memorial Arch was erected in 1889, it was meant for the centennial celebration of George Washington’s inauguration as America’s first president. Architect Stanford White was charged to honor the commemoration by transforming the wooden arch into a marble one in 1892 – the final Washington Square Arch was inaugurated on April 30, 1895.
