A wide area covering all the southeast part of the island, The Lower East Side extends from the south of the 14th Street to the South Street Seaport, and from the East River to Broadway, thus including within its territory Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, Noho and the East Village. These quarters have each their own specific sections on this website, we’ll take care of the Lower East Side in its strict sense. The Lower East Side has seen a continuous flux of immigrants : Russians, Romanians, Hungarians, Greeks, Polish, Italians, Ukrainians, Germans and most certainly Eastern European Jews who built a very important community here.
