In the 1860s, rich businessman William Astor constructed a particular Brownstone-styled mansion on the spot, then still pretty much rural. In 1893, the mansion was transformed into the first Waldorf=Astoria Hotel (now written with double dash). It was indeed at the very spot, bordering the 5th Avenue, that the ESB was constructed from 1929, the strongest property expansion of the 1920s.This photo has been viewed 1734 times
